The research team from the "China-Asia University System" (CAUS), formed by China Medical University and Asia University, led by Prof. Chao-Tung Wang from the AU Department of Medicine, alongside Vice Superintendents Chiu-Ching Huang and Yu-Hsuan Lai from China Medical University Hospital (CMUH), has jointly developed the "Intelligent Monitoring and Warning System for Home Hemodialysis" (commonly known as kidney dialysis). By appropriately slowing down the dialysis speed and extending the treatment duration during the process, this system allows patients to undergo hemodialysis safely at home. Research indicates that the 5-year survival rate of patients utilizing home hemodialysis is 30% to 40% higher than those undergoing conventional hemodialysis, making it the most ideal dialysis modality at present. This breakthrough garnered the "2024 National Innovation Award," the highest benchmark accolade in the domestic biomedical and healthcare sectors, and the related technologies have been filed for patents in Taiwan and the United States.

Prof. Chao-Tung Wang stated that Taiwan's incidence and prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) rank first globally and continue to escalate, costing the National Health Insurance (NHI) nearly NT$50 billion annually. Facing the challenges of public health prevention and control in hospitals, the vigorous development of medical big data and artificial intelligence brings innovative opportunities for renal disease care. The award-winning "Intelligent Monitoring and Warning System for Home Hemodialysis" was collaboratively developed by a team consisting of Chiu-Ching Huang, Yu-Hsuan Lai, Vice Superintendent Jiun-Liang Chen, Directors Shih-Sheng Chang and Hui-Liang Kuo, Analyst Chien-Shin Liao, and Registered Nurse Ya-Hui Lu from CMUH. Through cross-disciplinary integration that merges the expertise of clinicians with digital computer science techniques, this intelligent monitoring and warning system was successfully forged, shaping a safer and more comfortable dialysis environment for patients.

Prof. Chao-Tung Wang pointed out that home hemodialysis offers the benefits of "three highs and one low"—allowing patients to eat well, feel energetic, enjoy a high quality of life, and substantially reduce their medication dosage. In addition to enhancing survival rates and refining health insurance efficiency, it liberates patients from long-term, exhausting commutes to and from hospitals. To ensure treatment safety, the research team engineered an intelligent monitoring and warning system that integrates a digital care App with a cloud-based care platform. By consolidating data from dialysis machines and the Internet of Things (IoT) and utilizing artificial intelligence to forecast and identify potential risks during treatment, the system automatically alerts patients, medical staff, and family members for timely intervention if any anomaly is detected. Currently, the system has successfully monitored over 10,000 home hemodialysis sessions, and its proprietary technologies have been filed for Taiwanese and U.S. patents.

Prof. Chao-Tung Wang added that it is worth noting that the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry (IBMI) established the "National Innovation Award" in 2003 to honor outstanding achievements featuring innovative characteristics, technical advantages, and practical strategies in fields such as biopharmaceuticals, new medical technologies, and medical devices and equipment. Asia University has demonstrated stellar performance in advancing artificial intelligence technologies associated with the smart healthcare industry, repeatedly winning accolades and spreading good tidings in recent years. Looking ahead, the university will remain dedicated to smart medical research within the domain of kidney diseases, further integrating digital technology into renal disease care.
