AU invites Dr. Wen-Bin Xie, General Manager of Wolong Company, to discuss SDGs water resources issues!

GM Xie suggests AU: Intelligentize environmental monitoring systems to improve water reuse rates and carbon reduction through AI.

Asia University's "2022 Distinguished Lecture Series" on SDGs Sustainable Development invited Dr. Wen-Bin Xie, General Manager of Wolong Smart Environmental Co. and AU alumni advisor, to deliver a speech yesterday (January 12th) titled "SDGs Water Resources Dilemma and AI Water Resources Sustainability." AU President Jeffrey J.P. Tsai stated that Asia University actively implements SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) into its teaching and campus administration planning, establishes student clubs to enhance sustainability awareness, and introduces innovative technologies to boost the efficiency of SDGs promotion.

Dr. Wen-Bin Xie holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from National Chiao Tung University and formerly served as a principal engineer at TSMC, where he assisted in optimizing plant water treatment performance and boosting the circular economy for water recycling. He once proposed the vision of "using a single drop of water 3.5 times." He also served as a manager for the Environmental Information Development Foundation, guiding more than 300 factories in Taiwan to improve water efficiency. Furthermore, in the 2021 "Presidential Hackathon" competition, his team was recognized as an Outstanding Team for creating a public-private collaborative river basin governance platform, the "LASS Open Source Public Welfare Environmental Sensing Network," aiming to ensure clean water, safe food, and a healthy living environment.

GM Xie shared that utilizing AI for early warnings and decision-making functions can significantly optimize water resource efficiency, having helped enterprises save millions in water bills annually. While generating economic benefits, this approach also achieves water conservation, carbon reduction, and lesser environmental burdens, fulfilling the global citizenship responsibility to protect the planet.

GM Xie mentioned that the 2021 Taiwan drought and water restrictions heavily impacted domestic usage, the technology sector, and agriculture, prompting a spike in public water awareness. However, water rates in Taiwan are relatively low—ranking as the second lowest globally—which creates an economic barrier for industrial wastewater reclamation and reuse. He suggested that once water pricing is rationalized, public behavior regarding water conservation will naturally shift. Additionally, due to climate change and increasing industrial water demands, Taiwan's drought cycle is projected to shrink from once every 10 years to once every 3 to 4 years. As drought scenarios worsen, effective water resource management becomes even more indispensable.

GM Xie advised AU to upgrade its current environmental monitoring systems with smart technology, allowing the analytics system to move beyond mere observation to achieve the ultimate goal of carbon reduction. For example, using AI for precision chemical dosing can enhance water reuse rates and carbon reduction, preventing the waste of unnecessary chemicals and water resources. AU has currently implemented a smart drip irrigation system, which effectively utilizes recycled water to achieve eco-friendly water reuse for campus landscaping.

The lecture also discussed how importing big data into patented AI models helps elevate wastewater (pollution prevention system) treatment efficiency and precision control systems. The objectives are to reduce manual operations, chemical dosing quantities, sludge production, and carbon emissions. Implementing smart technology has indeed become the linchpin for driving sustainable development.

The Q&A session was highly interactive, with faculty and students onsite and online asking questions enthusiastically. They sought GM Xie's advice regarding practices, mechanisms, and theories, covering topics such as optimizing the cost-effectiveness of smart drip irrigation, establishing water footprint inventories, lowering mechanisms for external natural resource costs, and maximizing greywater recycling while minimizing its side effects. The lecture profoundly inspired everyone to value sustainable development and water resources. Yesterday's presentation was shared with AU's primary and secondary administrators alongside nearly 130 online faculty members and students.
