The College of Creative Design at Asia University hosted the "Sustainable Design Power" lecture, inviting Kuo-Kai Liao, a designer from Ubiquiti Inc. He shared his journey titled "An Atypical Designer's Leap into Foreign Design Circles," his experiences entering the design industry, and how to quickly adjust one's mindset and maintain maximum momentum to continuously advance in the field of design.
Designer Liao mentioned that in his early career, he spent seven years in a traditional factory working on mold design, where he learned how to interact with senior professionals and developed communication skills. Later, he changed career paths to engage in industrial design at the ASUS Design Center, working as a mobile phone designer while pursuing an executive master's program in design. After winning several competitions, he gradually gained recognition and a sense of achievement, which ignited his passion for design.
"As a designer, I believe the most important ability is storytelling!" Liao pointed out that during the design process, in order to convey the story behind a piece of work, animation techniques can complement 2D and 3D displays to help clients fully understand the concept. He added that with self-discipline and passion, designers can master different design tools to achieve versatile capabilities.
Liao encouraged students, saying, "Do not fear whether what you are currently doing is the 'right' path." Whether you like making models, designing animations, or creating aesthetically pleasing things, just give it a try. As long as it makes you happy, you will find the drive to persevere. Regarding starting a design business, he advised gaining industry experience first to interact with clients and identify any professional gaps.
Chen Chi-Hsiung, Vice President of AU and Dean of the College of Creative Design, stated that through Designer Liao's experience sharing, students can understand the multifaceted nature of being a designer and learn to face ever-changing workplace challenges. As long as they embrace passion and maintain professional capabilities, they will shine in their respective fields.
Shi Yu-Xin, a student from the Department of Commercial Design, shared that loving design means continuously developing diverse skills. Just like Designer Liao transformed his mold design experience and industrial design knowledge into professional expertise, one must remain flexible and adaptable in the face of future standards.
